Neural networks are an amazing technology, they have the potential to change the world as we know it (and already are) by performing tasks that traditionally were very hard for computers. I read somewhere online that things humans find hard, computers find easy. Things computers find hard, humans find easy. This is starting to change.
Think of it like this, if you walk into a room and see a group of people you’ll instantly recognise if you know any of them, their sex, their ethnicity, their mood etc. This is totally automatic for people, after all, you have the world’s most powerful computer in your head!
Those things are incredibly hard however for a computer to do…until recently. They have been made easier by replicating the way your brain learns in software to train computer systems to do things like image recognition and to understand speech.
They aren’t perfect yet, but they are capable of some pretty amazing things, however as Uncle Ben tells us (Spiderman’s uncle not the rice guy) with great power comes great responsibility.
There are already examples of using this technology to track and identify individuals on CCTV which could be a legitimate use by law enforcement but could be easily misused.
Researchers in Belgium have discovered a way to defeat these neural networks using a simple image to trick the system into not recognising them as a person anymore. This could lead to clothing that stops these systems tracking individuals for use political dissidents or protestors…or of course criminals!
The above is a small area of application of neural network technology, here at SteadyGo we are already using neural networks to help our clients save time and effort by automating tasks like sentiment analysis and we use them internally to transcribe recordings of client meetings to ensure we don’t miss a thing when gathering requirements!
