How it works

Step 1 — Connect your AI services

Configure Azure AI Search, Azure OpenAI and Azure Storage through your hosting environment.

Step 2 — Choose what to index

Select the Umbraco document types and published content that should be available to visitors.

Step 3 — Add the website components

Add the ready-to-use search and chat components to your Umbraco templates. The chat widget can appear as a popup or as an inline panel.

Requirements and licensing

Designed for controlled, responsible use

The Toolkit keeps infrastructure settings and secrets in server configuration. It works with published content, supports source links and guidance rules, and lets you control which content types are indexed.

Your website remains in control of its content, document types and presentation. Azure services, hosting, storage and email are configured and billed separately by you.

What you need

  • Umbraco 17.6.2 or later
  • An Azure AI Search resource
  • An Azure OpenAI deployment
  • Azure Storage for generated content and chat data
  • SMTP configuration for live enquiry and transcript email delivery
  • HTTPS hosting for production use

A separate AI API application is not required. The Toolkit runs inside your Umbraco application.

FAQ

Does it work with my existing Umbraco website?

The Toolkit is designed for Umbraco 17.6.2 and later 17.x releases. It does not install website document types or replace your existing content structure.

Does it require a separate API service?

No. Indexing, search, chat orchestration, enquiry routing and email queuing run within the Umbraco application.

Does it index unpublished content?

No. The Toolkit is designed around published content. Unpublished or excluded content is removed from the generated files and search index.

Can I control what the AI can answer?

Yes. You choose which document types are indexed and can configure guidance rules for different subjects or enquiry types.

What does Azure cost?

Azure AI Search, Azure OpenAI, Storage, hosting and SMTP are separate services billed by their respective providers.
